You know the plane is safe. You know the spider can't hurt you. Knowing makes no difference, because a phobia doesn't live in the part of you that knows things. It lives in the part that reacts. I use hypnotherapy, and EMDR where the fear started with a real event, to change the reaction itself, so the next flight is a flight and not an ordeal.

"I've turned down holidays and work trips because of the flight."
"I'm fine until the cabin door closes."
"I plan whole days around avoiding it."
"I know it's irrational. That's what makes it so embarrassing."
A phobia is a protection response that learned the wrong lesson. Somewhere along the way, through one bad flight, one panic, or something you saw as a child, your nervous system linked a situation with danger. Every time you avoid it, that link gets stronger, because avoiding it feels like it worked.
That's why talking yourself down doesn't stick. The response fires faster than reasoning can reach it. To change it, the work has to reach the level where the link was made and update it there.
Hypnotherapy lets us rehearse the feared situation in a calm, controlled state until your body stops treating it as a threat. Where the fear started with a specific event, a turbulent flight, an accident, a medical scare, EMDR clears the memory so it stops setting off the alarm.
Specific phobias often shift in fewer sessions than people expect. The first session maps where the fear started and how it plays out now. From there each session builds on the last, and we test it against the real thing as you go.
Two hours. We map when the fear started, what sets it off and exactly how it shows up: the night before, at the airport, at take-off, in turbulence. You leave with a technique you can use straight away.
We work on the response itself. In hypnosis you walk through the journey, gate, boarding, doors closing, take-off, until your body stops bracing. If an old flight or event is driving it, we clear that with EMDR.
A final session close to the trip, and a short recording to use on the day. Most people tell me the strangest part is how ordinary it felt.
The same structure works for driving and motorways, needles, being sick, heights and most other specific fears.
Flying, driving and motorways, being sick, needles and blood, heights, enclosed spaces, spiders, dentists and most other specific fears. If yours isn't on the list, ask on the free call.
Fewer than most people expect. A simple, specific phobia often shifts in a handful of sessions. A fear tangled up with wider anxiety or a past event takes longer, and I'll tell you honestly on the first call which you're looking at.
Often, yes. Get in touch as early as you can, give me the date on the call and we'll plan the sessions back from it.
Yes. Hypnotherapy works well by video, so you can do this from anywhere. In person is near Harrietsham, just outside Maidstone.
