the person you can't leave. the one you keep going back to. the same story with a new face.

Trauma bonding. Why you keep going back, and how it stops.

You can list every reason to walk away. You've told your friends you're done. And part of you is still waiting for the message. That isn't weakness and it isn't stupidity. It's a bond built by the hurt itself, and it runs deeper than logic. I use EMDR and hypnotherapy to break that bond at the root, so you stop being pulled back, and stop choosing the same person in a different body.

If this is you, you're in the right place.

  • "I know they're bad for me. I still miss them."

  • "Every relationship ends up the same, just with a different person."

  • "The good days were so good that I stayed for the bad ones."

  • "I feel more alive with the ones who hurt me than the ones who are kind."

What's actually going on

The hurt and the relief got wired together.

A trauma bond forms when someone is the source of both the pain and the comfort. Hurt, then warmth. Silence, then attention. The relief when they come back is so strong that your nervous system learns to chase it. Over time, the person who hurts you becomes the person who makes the hurt stop.

Most people I work with can trace the template further back than this relationship. If love was unpredictable growing up, unpredictable love feels like home. That's why calm, kind people can feel flat, and why the pull back is so hard to fight with willpower alone.

How I work on it

Break the bond where it was made

EMDR reprocesses the moments that wired the bond in: the rejections, the reconciliations, and the older experiences that taught you this is what love feels like. Once those memories lose their charge, the pull loses its grip. Hypnotherapy then works on the habits that remain, the checking, the replaying, the urge to reach out.

We go at your pace. Nothing is forced and you don't have to retell every detail. The first session is two hours, where we map the pattern and agree what we work on first.

Why the same person keeps turning up

It isn't bad luck. It's a template.

People who keep ending up in the same relationship aren't choosing badly at random. They're choosing what feels familiar, and familiar feels like chemistry.

  • The pull. Someone a little out of reach, hot then cold, feels exciting. Someone steady feels boring.
  • The hook. The highs after the lows feel like proof it's special.
  • The stay. You become the one who works harder, explains more and forgives faster.
  • The return. When it ends, the silence feels worse than the hurt, so you go back, or find the next version.

Changing the template means steady people start to feel good, and the old type stops feeling like chemistry. That's the work.

What people ask first.

Is this only about romantic relationships?

No. The same bond forms with parents, friends, bosses and business partners. If someone has a hold on you that doesn't make sense to anyone else, it's worth a conversation.

Do I have to have left the relationship first?

No. Plenty of people start while they're still in it, or still in contact. We work on the pull first, so the decisions get easier.

Will I have to go over everything that happened?

No. EMDR doesn't need you to tell every detail, and we go at a pace that feels safe. You stay in control of what we work on.

What if I'm not safe right now?

Please put your safety first. In the UK the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free on 0808 2000 247, and the Men's Advice Line is on 0808 801 0327. In an emergency, call 999. When you're ready, I'm here.
