Some feelings are not waiting to be felt

You have sat with it for months and it is exactly the same size. Why some feelings are not leftovers waiting for room, and what is really holding them there.

Some feelings are not waiting to be felt

Sit with it. Do not push it away. Let it be there without trying to fix it.

You have been doing that since the spring.

Properly, as well. You stopped filling every evening with something. You put the phone face down and let the thing arrive and you did not get up and find a job to do. You gave it a name. Some nights you cried, and everybody agrees that is meant to be the good part.

It is the same size it was in March.

The instruction is not wrong. That needs saying first, because what most people do with a difficult feeling is get away from it, and getting away from it costs more than sitting still ever does. The second drink. The hour that goes on the phone. The tidying that starts at ten at night. A feeling pushed under does not leave. It waits, and it comes back out somewhere it does not belong.

So making room for it does something. Somebody who has spent thirty years never letting a feeling finish will get further in one honest evening than in the previous decade. That is a real thing and it is worth saying plainly before anything else.

The correction that has grown up around the advice is worth having too. There is a difference between feeling something and going round it, and plenty of people who believe they are sitting with a feeling are doing the other thing for two hours at a stretch. Circling is not the same as landing, and the people making that point are right to make it.

Both of those are true. Neither of them accounts for yours.

Because you have not been circling. You have been still, and honest, and you have given it more evenings than you would admit to anyone. The house quiet, everyone upstairs, the kitchen light off, doing the thing exactly as described and waiting for something to give.

What that does to you is a problem of its own. You have followed sound advice, carefully, for months, and what you have to show for it is the original feeling plus a new one underneath, which is that you must be doing something wrong at a level nobody can help with. That one rarely gets said out loud.

You are not short on insight either. You can name the year, the house, the person. And knowing where it began has changed nothing about how Thursday goes.

When the feeling is not a leftover

The advice and the correction both rest on the same idea about what a feeling is. That it is already inside you, complete, old, waiting for room. Something that arrived once and never got let out. On that account, feeling it is drainage. Let enough through and the level drops.

Some feelings are not leftovers. They are not sitting in you at all. They are made, on the spot, every time.

Something takes in the situation and settles what it means before you have finished registering that anything has happened. The feeling follows from that reading, correctly. And the reading is done below the level you can sit and watch, which is why watching has not touched it.

So you can feel it all the way down to the floor, do it well, do it for an hour, and the part that produced it is exactly as it was. On Thursday it produces another one. The same size, because it is coming from the same place and nothing has been said to that place.

You have sat with the resentment about your brother for six years and it has not lost an ounce. You have been patient with it. You have let it be there. You have stopped arguing with it in your head. It is precisely where it was the day he said it.

None of that is a failure of feeling.

Or it is the flatness that turns up at seven every evening. You made room for that as well. You booked the week away and came back tired in the way you left, which is not what a week off does to somebody who is simply tired.

I work with people who have felt a thing more thoroughly than anyone should have to and are standing where they started. Not because they went about it badly. Because whatever was making the feeling was never in the room while they were doing it.

What holds it in place is not a shortage of feeling. It is a piece of learning that got laid down early and has never once been looked at since.

Something got decided, usually without words, and usually before you were old enough to argue with it. What it means when a person goes quiet on you. What it costs to need something. What follows from being wrong in front of others. None of it was written down anywhere. It simply became how things are, and it has been running ever since without ever being asked to account for itself.

The feeling is the correct answer to that reading. It is not malfunctioning. It is accurate, given what it was told a long time ago.

Which is why attention on its own does not get at it. You can watch something run for as long as you like without altering how it runs.

What changes it is the reading underneath being taken out and looked at properly, and found to be a conclusion drawn by a child out of one bad year rather than a fact about the world. When that gives way, the feeling is not being managed better. It stops being produced.

Some feelings really are what the advice describes. Grief is. A loss is. Those do soften by being let through, slowly, and nobody has found a shortcut, and no technique improves on time and being allowed to feel it.

It is the ones that come back at the same weight, year after year, however well you sit with them, that are telling you something different.

You will still sit with things afterwards. Most people do.

It is only that the feeling turns up once, about the thing that actually happened, and then it goes.
